Driving in the B postcode area – What to Expect

Your instructor will introduce a variety of road types and driving situations across the B postcode area, depending on your experience and the routes suitable for your course.

Training may cover residential roads, busier routes, junctions, roundabouts and manoeuvres where appropriate, helping you develop observation, planning and vehicle control.

This variety helps learners build experience across different driving conditions rather than practising on the same type of road throughout their course.

Birmingham and the West Midlands. The B postcode area includes Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull and West Bromwich. Key roads in the wider area include the A38 and A34, although driving conditions vary considerably between individual towns and districts. Local features include Birmingham's large urban junctions, busy shopping streets and residential neighbourhoods. The local contrast between built-up junctions and quieter surrounding roads calls for careful observation, suitable speed and sound lane positioning. Nearby communities within the wider B postcode area include Erdington, Kings Heath, Northfield and Castle Bromwich. Other important local road links include A45, A41 and A452. The mix of streets, junction layouts and traffic levels differs from one locality to another, so learners should be prepared for the conditions that apply to their own town and surrounding roads.
