How Do Intensive Driving Courses Work?
An intensive driving course concentrates your driving tuition into a shorter period instead of spreading lessons over many weeks or months. This guide explains how our intensive courses are structured, how long they take, how practical test planning works and what happens from booking through to your course.
What Is an Intensive Driving Course?
An intensive driving course is a concentrated period of one-to-one driving tuition. Instead of taking one or two hours of lessons each week, you complete a larger number of hours over consecutive or closely grouped training days.
The purpose is to reduce long gaps between lessons and allow you to build on what you learned during the previous session while it is still fresh.
That is why choosing the correct course length matters. A learner who already has substantial driving experience will normally need fewer hours than a complete beginner.
What Does a Typical Intensive Driving Course Day Look Like?
Our intensive courses are normally structured around six hours of driving tuition per day. The six hours are divided into three two-hour driving sessions, with two 30-minute breaks between them.
The breaks are not included in your six hours of driving tuition.
Exact start and finish times can vary depending on the instructor and course arrangements, but the same six-hour training structure is used for a standard intensive training day.
How Long Does an Intensive Driving Course Take?
The number of days depends on the number of tuition hours you book. Because our standard intensive day contains six hours of tuition, the course length increases in six-hour blocks.

What Happens During the Course?
Your course is one-to-one with your driving instructor. The training is adapted to your current ability rather than following an identical lesson plan for every learner.
Building Core Driving Skills
Beginners work through the fundamentals of controlling the car, moving off safely, junctions, observations, positioning and developing confidence on the road.
Developing Existing Experience
If you already drive, your instructor can focus more heavily on weaknesses, consistency, decision making and areas that are preventing you from reaching test standard.
Manoeuvres and Independent Driving
Your course includes the skills you need for the practical test, including manoeuvres, independent driving and safe decision making in different road situations.
Preparing for Test Standard
As your course progresses, the focus moves towards driving consistently without intervention and correcting faults that could result in a test failure.
How Does the Practical Driving Test Work?
The practical test is an important part of planning an intensive course, but the driving course and the practical test booking are separate.
Only the student can book, manage or change their practical driving test. No driving school or instructor can deal with the test booking on the student’s behalf.
You Can Book Your Course Before You Have a Practical Test
You do not need to wait until you have a practical test before booking an intensive driving course with us. You can choose between two main scheduling options.
Book a Dedicated Course Week
You choose a course week in advance and complete the majority of your tuition during that week. You then search for a practical test that works with the course arrangements.
Schedule Your Course Around Your Practical Test
You book your course first, then book your practical test yourself. Once the test is confirmed, your course can be scheduled to lead up to the practical test date.
What If the Practical Test Is Not During the Course Week?
If you have selected a dedicated course week and cannot secure a practical test during that week, your course can still proceed.
Where appropriate, six hours of tuition can be saved for the practical test date. This means you can complete the majority of the course during your dedicated week and use the remaining tuition closer to the practical test.
This is one of the reasons the practical test does not need to be booked before you secure your course.
Is an Intensive Driving Course Suitable for Everyone?
Intensive learning works well for many learners because there are fewer long gaps between lessons and you can concentrate heavily on driving over a defined period.
However, it is still a demanding way to learn. Six hours of driving in one day requires concentration, and some learners prefer to spread their tuition over a longer period.

You want to progress quickly, can commit to several training days, prefer concentrated learning and are comfortable completing several hours of driving in one day.
A Semi-Intensive Course May Suit You If…
You want structured progression but would prefer your tuition to be spread over several weeks rather than completing six-hour intensive training days.
What Happens After You Book?
Once your booking is completed, the next steps depend on the scheduling option you selected and whether your theory and practical tests have already been booked.
