Driving in Birmingham – What to Expect

Birmingham offers a busy and varied driving environment, making it an excellent location to learn. Learners gain experience on a mix of road types, including:

The A38 and A34, providing exposure to fast-moving traffic and key city routes.

Town centre roads such as Corporation Street and New Street, ideal for developing clutch control, positioning, and awareness in heavy traffic conditions.

Roundabouts and complex junctions such as Five Ways and the A4540 ring road connections, helping build confidence with positioning and decision-making.

Retail areas such as Bullring Shopping Centre and nearby car parks, useful for practising bay parking, observation, and low-speed manoeuvres.

Residential streets in areas like Selly Oak and Handsworth, with narrower roads and parked cars, ideal for practising manoeuvres and hazard awareness.

Local routes towards areas such as Solihull and Sutton Coldfield, where learners practise anticipation, speed control, and handling varied traffic conditions.

This variety ensures that by the time you take your test, you are well prepared for a wide range of driving scenarios.

The whole process from start to finish was handled completely professionally with no undue stress. My driving instructor John Nelson was fantastic and made the whole process an enjoyable experience. John gave me everything I needed to pass first time. I would highly recommend both John and oneweekdriving to anybody and everybody. Thank you all very much.

Peter was an exceptional teacher; patient, tenacious and he knows his stuff. I went for the three day intensive course which was perfect. I passed the test first time round. I will recommend this course – and Peter – to anyone looking to pass first time.

Learning to drive on the one week course was a really positive experience. Bob was a genuine guy, who I quickly felt comfortable and confident with. I felt I made progress very quickly under his guidance, due to his excellent teaching. Bob was able to answer all my questions clearly and thoroughly. As expected, when learning to drive, mistakes were made, but Bob’s style was to criticise constructively, so that my errors were quickly rectified, without any feelings of inadequacy at all. It was obvious that Bob wanted me to pass, not just for himself (as I’m sure all instructors get satisfaction from their pupils passing) but for me too. I would be happy to recommend him to other learner drivers.
